SUMMARY:Repositioning Community Philanthropy for Impact through Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:In the ever-evolving landscape of information\, it’s undeniable how stories and narratives hold the immense power to shape our perceptions and influence our understanding of the world. Community philanthropy needs to be re-positioned for impact through storytelling. This involves leveraging the stories of communities in a manner that conveys the significance\, effectiveness\, and transformative potential of local giving efforts. Storytelling can be utilized by: \n1. Humanizing the Impact: Relaying stories of individuals whose lives have been impacted by philanthropic acts; emphasizing the experiences and challenges encountered\, and the observable results of local giving. \n2. Highlighting Success Stories: Showcasing stories of success from community-led initiatives that have achieved meaningful outcomes through philanthropy; Illustrating how grassroots organizations and projects have made a difference in addressing local needs\, fostering social cohesion\, and building resilient communities. These stories can serve as inspiring examples and models for replication. \n3. Amplify Diverse Voices: Ensure that storytelling reflects the diversity of voices and experiences within the community. Elevate the perspectives of marginalized groups\, including women\, people of color\, LGBTQ+ individuals\, and others whose voices may be underrepresented. By amplifying diverse voices\, storytelling can foster greater inclusivity and representation within philanthropic narratives. \n4. Empower Community Narratives: Empower community members to share their own stories of giving\, solidarity\, and resilience. Provide platforms and opportunities for individuals to express their experiences\, aspirations\, and visions for community philanthropy. Encourage storytelling as a means of building collective identity\, fostering empathy\, and strengthening social connections. \n5. Illustrate Collaboration and Partnership: Highlight stories of collaboration and partnership between philanthropic organizations\, local nonprofits\, government agencies\, businesses\, and community members. Showcase how collective action and shared goals can amplify impact\, leverage resources\, and address complex social challenges more effectively than individual efforts alone. \n6. Emphasize Long-Term Impact: Tell stories that illustrate the long-term impact and sustainability of community philanthropy initiatives. Showcase how investments in education\, health\, economic development\, and social justice can yield lasting benefits for future generations. Highlight the importance of continuity\, adaptability\, and community ownership in achieving sustained impact over time. \n7. Address Challenges and Lessons Learned: Be transparent about the challenges\, setbacks\, and lessons learned in the process of community philanthropy. Share stories of resilience\, innovation\, and perseverance in overcoming obstacles and adapting strategies to changing circumstances. Acknowledge the complexities of community development work and the importance of ongoing learning and improvement. \n8. Inspire Action and Engagement: Use storytelling to inspire action\, mobilize support\,and foster a culture of giving and civic participation within the community. Invite audiences to become active participants in philanthropic efforts\, whether through volunteering\, donating\, advocating for change\, or contributing their skills and expertise. Empower individuals to see themselves as agents of positive change within their own communities. \nStorytelling has the power to connect more deeply with audiences and encourage more support and involvement by giving the impact a human face. By harnessing the power of storytelling\, community philanthropy can be re-positioned as a dynamic and impactful force for positive change\, capable of mobilizing resources\, building solidarity\, and transforming lives and communities for the better. \nDate: Friday June 19th\, 2024 \nTime: 9am – 1pm EAT \nVenue: Baraza Media Lab \nContact us: eunice@viceversaglobal.com and Hellen.Kuria@kcdf.or.ke

It serves as a platform to highlight the beauty\, wealth\, and importance of oceans while promoting solutions to the challenges they face. \nOfficially recognized by the United Nations in 2008\, World Oceans Day has evolved into a global movement with events worldwide. This year’s theme\, “Protecting Our Oceans\, Protecting Our Future\,” underscores the need for immediate action to preserve marine ecosystems\, reduce plastic pollution\, and promote sustainable ocean management practices. It is a reminder of the oceans’ significance and a call to action for individuals\, governments\, and organizations to collaborate in safeguarding these vital resources for future generations. \n  \nObjectives of the Festival\n\nPromote Responsible Tourism: By organizing this festival\, we aim to raise awareness about the impact of tourism on the oceans and marine life\, encouraging visitors\, tour operators and local community to adopt responsible practices as foundational to optimal leisure and comfort during their stay\, and a catalyst for more enhanced social and economic outcomes for the blue economy stakeholders at large.\nCreate a Plastic-Free Environment: Through education\, advocacy\, and practical initiatives\, we seek to minimize the use of plastic products and promote sustainable alternatives to reduce plastic pollution in our oceans and beaches. This will include exhibitions on creative innovations around alternatives to plastics\, and plastic recycling products.\nShowcase Diani Beach as the Cleanest beach destination in Africa: By demonstrating our commitment to cleanliness and environmental stewardship\, we aim to position Diani Beach as a stellar tourism destination in Africa\, shining example of eco-friendly tourism in the region\, attracting environmentally-conscious travellers from across the globe.\n\n\nConclusion\nThrough the ‘Zero Plastic Festival\, Vice Versa Global and Samba Sports Youth Agenda endeavors to not only raise awareness about oceanic issues but also inspire tangible action towards building a more sustainable and resilient future for our planet’s oceans. Join us in celebrating World Oceans Day and making a meaningful difference in the health of our oceans! \nImagine pristine beaches\, vibrant communities\, and a thriving ecosystem. With your support\, we aim to turn this vision into reality by organizing the Diani Beach Zero Plastic Festival. As we gather to commemorate World Oceans Day\, we seek to do more than just mark the occasion; we strive to make a tangible impact. \nBy joining hands with us\, you will not only play a crucial role in promoting responsible tourism but also in fostering a plastic-free environment. Your contribution will directly fund the above budget and aid in the acquisition of essential cleaning equipment such as wheelbarrows\, rakes\, pangas\, slashers\, and other tools vital for our ongoing clean-up efforts. \nTogether\, let’s showcase Diani Beach as a shining example of environmental stewardship\, a beacon of hope for Africa and beyond. Your involvement will not only make a difference today but will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

This focus is timely as the world grapples with pressing issues such as environmental crisis\, growing inequality\, and widespread youth unemployment\, necessitating urgent collaborative efforts. While traditional economic models have often fallen short\, social entrepreneurship has proven to be a catalyst for positive change\, particularly in Africa. \n  \nSocial entrepreneurship in Africa is effectively addressing social challenges through sustainable enterprises that prioritise societal well-being. Despite notable growth\, there remain obstacles hindering its acceleration\, including limited access to finances\, absence of legal frameworks\, weak collaboration\, and capacity development. Additionally\, social entrepreneurship remains misunderstood and unpopular in many countries\, highlighting the need for greater awareness and strengthened networks. \n  \nAACOSE aims to address these challenges by leveraging existing networks and initiatives to build a continental network of social entrepreneurship. By connecting and strengthening these networks\, AACOSE seeks to propel social entrepreneurship into a transformative force for continental change. Through multi-sectoral collaboration and a Pan-African discussion\, AACOSE endeavours to bridge crucial gaps and advance social entrepreneurship in Africa. \n  \nMethodology of the conference \n  \nThe summit will use a methodology that blends the experiences and practices that will contribute to generating new knowledge and solutions. It will showcase models of social entrepreneurs\, case studies\, social entrepreneurship research\, and panel discussions. The sessions will be organised in plenary and breakout sessions. The breakout sessions provide the opportunity for in-depth conversation\, showcasing\, master class and practices on thematic areas. The parallel sessions are led by industry leaders. The AACOSE academia will focus on research paper presentations. \n  \nOutcomes \n  \nThe conference will generate new knowledge through panel discussions and case studies. This knowledge will be compiled in a book that will enhance our understanding of social entrepreneurship practices and challenges. This will serve as a learning resource for social entrepreneurship. In addition\, the conference will be able to connect various social entrepreneurship networks\, which will help to amplify the impact that is shaping the content. It will create new research opportunities for academia. The lessons from the conference will provide direction for advocacy for social entrepreneurship in Africa. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate & Time \n\nMay 15\, 2024 – May 17\, 2024\n8:00 AM – 6:00 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice KES 2\,500 – KES 60\,000\n\n\nBOOK NOW
