Desert Roses Girls Football Club is an emerging sports foundation for young girls in Kenya’s far northern Turkana region. It was founded back in 2017 by Rael Nkoi Lomoti (28), a former Premier League player in Kenya who is herself from Turkana.
Despite the huge challenges such as culture, marginalization, illiteracy from the parents, drought, famine, early pregnancy, and insecurity, Desert Roses still pushes through.
Under the name Let the Girls Play, the first football tournament took place in Lodwar last week, sponsored by the Australian Embassy in Kenya. A week later, dozens of new girls joined the Turkana Dessert Roses. As Rael puts it: ‘ At the Desert Roses we mentor young girls and mould them to be better people in the community.’ Watch the short video report on the tournament and on the Turkana Desert Roses.
