Purple Month, also known as Mental Health Awareness Month, provides an essential opportunity to shed light on mental health concerns and combat the surrounding stigma. This month-long initiative aims to increase consciousness of the prevalence and consequences of mental illness, encouraging open conversations and providing support for those affected.
In a meaningful step towards this cause, Vice Versa Media Ghana has joined forces with the Mental Health Authority of Ghana, showcasing their dedication to promoting awareness. This partnership plays a crucial role in disseminating crucial information to the public, aligning perfectly with the NGO’s overarching mission of advocating for the vulnerable members of society. Notably, the transition from October to May for this celebration highlights the focus on education and its pivotal impact on the mental well-being of Ghanaians, particularly the youth.
Moving More for Your Mental Health
Under the banner of Movement: Moving more for your mental health, the month-long celebration promises a myriad of events aimed at fostering understanding and support. The official launch, held at the Ghana Nursing and Midwifery Council in Accra, was marked with remarks from Dr. Pinaman Appau, CEO of the Mental Health Authority (MHA), stressing on the collective responsibility in raising awareness throughout the celebration also known as the purple month.

She added that the theme underscores a connection between our physical activities and our mental wellbeing, stressing that incorporating regular physical activity into one’s routine is not only beneficial for physical health but also crucial for maintaining optimal mental well-being.
Throughout the purple month, the MHA will focus on several key outcomes including enhancing understanding of mental health symptoms, diminishing stigma surrounding mental health, promoting mental health knowledge and fostering the mental well-being as a proactive approach to emotional health and cognitive agility.
“I urge you to engage in the purple month activities including media campaigns, local events, educational programs, and social media initiatives.” Professor Pinaman announced.

Lady Julia Osei Tutu, the wife of the Asantehene, emphasized the importance of addressing mental health challenges and fostering open conversations to dismantle the barriers of stigma and discrimination that hinder individuals from seeking assistance and accessing necessary support.
Highlighting her dedication to advocating for the independence and empowerment of vulnerable members of society, she underscored the significance of designating May as Purple Month.

The partnership between Vice Versa Media Ghana and the Mental Health Authority (MHA) to campaign against stigmatization and awareness creation, aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which includes goal 3 and 4.
