Robot Café, located on the ground floor of Lana Plaza on Oloitoktok Road in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, is the first restaurant in East and Central Africa to integrate robotics into its service. Renowned for its exquisite cuisine and cutting-edge technology, the café offers a futuristic dining experience where robots deliver food and drinks with remarkable efficiency. This innovation not only enhances service but also reflects Kenya’s growing embrace of technology across various sectors.

From the moment you step inside, the hum of robotic precision blends seamlessly with the warm ambience of a modern café. At the entrance, Claire, one of the café’s robots, audibly welcomes guests—a moment that often leaves visitors in awe. Many, fascinated by this unique experience, eagerly capture and share their encounters on social media, further fueling the café’s popularity and attracting more patrons eager to witness the technology firsthand.
First impression
The café’s décor perfectly aligns with its robotic theme, featuring futuristic designs on the walls and windows that complement both its name and the high-tech service it offers. Inside, white and blue hues brighten the dining space, creating an atmosphere that is both stylish and elegant.
Suspended from the ceiling, lush green plants add a refreshing contrast, while a massive plasma screen continuously showcases the impressive talents of various robots. During my visit, I noticed how passersby were drawn to these innovations—many discreetly recording the robotic displays, captivated by what they saw as a groundbreaking concept. This intrigue frequently translates into walk-ins, solidifying Robot Café’s reputation as a game-changer in the tech and hospitality industries. As a result, the café has quickly become a hot topic among Nairobians.

John Kariuki, the manager, shared that the restaurant officially opened on June 16, 2024. One of its standout features is the noticeable collaboration between human staff and robotic assistants, a dynamic that customers greatly appreciate. John explained that the café provides specialized training to ensure its waiters and waitresses work effectively alongside the robots, enhancing service efficiency and the overall dining experience.
“We frequently train our staff to understand the basics of the software our robots operate on,” he explains. “Just like using a phone or TV with a manual, our employees learn how to give direct commands—assigning robots to specific tables and ensuring they navigate correctly. Additionally, they are trained to identify potential malfunctions and handle them efficiently.”
John notes that while the robots rarely malfunction, their thermal cameras can be affected by varying daylight conditions. At times, their sensors may struggle to detect temperatures accurately. When such issues arise, the solution is often as simple as updating the software on a laptop. These updates include features like colour contrast adjustments, enhancing the robots’ ability to distinguish different objects with greater clarity.
Enhancing service
“Robots bring unique advantages to our restaurant,” he adds. “Traditionally, waiters carry trays to serve food and drinks, but here, we have embraced a system where both heavy and light items can be effortlessly transported by robots. This innovation has significantly improved efficiency and enhanced the overall dining experience.”

These female-like machines are designed to carry serving trays, which feature both upper and lower compartments to accommodate multiple orders at once. Their built-in screens change dynamically throughout service, and I witnessed one robot’s lower screen shift into a cheerful smiley face after delivering an order. While adults are often fascinated by these machines, it is the children who are truly enthralled, eagerly trying to engage them in playful interactions.
The café is bustling, with customers filling up tables and orders coming in rapidly. The synergy between the robots and human staff is evident. In the kitchen, chefs receive orders, swiftly prepare meals, and plate them before signaling the robots for pickup. Once loaded with orders, the waiters and waitresses input the necessary instructions, and the robots set off, gliding effortlessly through the café to deliver meals with accuracy. Teamwork between humans and robots in a restaurant setting is evident in the way they collaborate to create a seamless, efficient, and high-quality dining experience.
Employment concerns
While robots handle logistical tasks, human staff remain actively engaged with customers—addressing special requests, answering inquiries, and offering personalized service. This blend of human warmth and robotic efficiency creates a balanced and engaging dining experience, redefining the future of hospitality.

“Our waiters and waitresses work more efficiently with this technology because it allows them to send food to one table via the robots while attending to another, ensuring a smooth and organized flow of service,” John explains. “These robots significantly reduce the workload for our staff, making their jobs easier and more manageable.”
The robots navigate the restaurant using sensors and cameras, relying on pre-programmed maps and real-time data to accurately locate tables and avoid obstacles. This advanced system ensures prompt and efficient service, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Addressing concerns about robots potentially displacing human workers in the food service industry, John reassures me that there are many tasks people can still perform better than machines. “Our hiring process remains unchanged despite introducing robots,” he affirms. He notes that the restaurant currently employs about 54 people, all of whom have retained their jobs even with automation in place. “This is a concept people will need to embrace because it is the future—it streamlines operations and makes work significantly easier,” he adds.
“We have many qualified individuals who have completed food and beverage courses, yet unemployment remains a major challenge in Kenya,” he acknowledges. “While the introduction of robots may raise concerns about job security, our priority is ensuring that employment opportunities remain protected and that more people can find work in the industry.”

John takes immense pride in Robot Café being the first of its kind in East and Central Africa—a milestone he does not take for granted. He admits that bringing this concept to life was no easy feat, but every time customers express their appreciation, he feels a deep sense of fulfilment.
To illustrate the café’s ambitions, he references tech giants like Google and Apple, emphasizing that Robot Café strives for similar innovation and impact. “We have recently shipped another robot into the country, one that is OpenAI-integrated,” he reveals. “It is incredibly advanced, capable of doing much more than our current bots—I would even say it is smarter than the average human. Our goal is to keep growing and eventually expand by opening more branches in the future.”
One of the biggest challenges John highlights is managing the café’s popularity during peak hours. He explains how many customers walk in and, captivated by the robots, find it hard to leave. “We can only accommodate a certain number of people at a time, and the last thing we want is for it to feel like we are rushing our customers due to limited space,” he says. “There are days when we are fully booked, yet we still receive walk-ins, and it is difficult to turn them away. It is heartbreaking when we have to ask some customers to make reservations for less busy days.”
Challenges and lessons learned

John also recalls an obstacle they faced when the café first opened. “One of our robots, Nadia, had a charger malfunction and sourcing replacements locally was nearly impossible,” he reminisces. “We had to ship spare parts from Lagos, which was a one-time fix that prepared us better for future issues.”
While the robots are designed to operate efficiently, unexpected challenges such as technical glitches or navigation errors can arise. In such instances, the human staff steps in and resolves the issue, ensuring that service continues uninterrupted. This seamless collaboration between humans and robots is essential to maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction.
John also disclosed that the café offers free 45-minute lectures to students studying robotics, allowing them to see real-life robots in action. These sessions provide insights into how the machines operate, the types of software and sensors they use, and the role of robotics in modern industries. “It is our way of giving back to the community,” he says.
The food service industry is rapidly evolving with new technologies, including automated ordering systems, AI-driven inventory management, robotics for food preparation and delivery, and smart kitchens. AI is also enhancing customer service through chatbots that manage reservations and answer queries, while intelligent virtual assistants take orders and provide personalized recommendations. These innovations aim to streamline operations, enhance customer experience, and promote sustainability.
Technology is reshaping the food service industry in ways we never imagined. Restaurant owners who embrace these advancements are better positioned to optimize operations, enhance customer satisfaction, and scale their businesses.
