TRANSFORMING EDUCATION: EUNICE AGYEPONG’S JOURNEY TO EMPOWER NOKA’S YOUTH
On October 5th, 2024, as the world honors teachers, we shine a light on Eunice Asiedua Agyepong, a young educator whose passion, resilience, and love for children have transformed the future of an entire community. Awarded the Joy Impact Award for her outstanding contributions to education, Eunice’s journey to establishing the Noka M/A Basic School is a powerful story of tenacity, leadership, and empathy. In a community where children once risked their lives to access education, Eunice is rewriting their destinies.
Born and raised in Ghana’s Eastern Region, Eunice grew up surrounded by educators—her father was a school principal, and her mother was a local volunteer teacher. Inspired by her parents, she pursued a career in education, always believing that the key to societal growth lies in nurturing young minds. When she was posted to Noka in the Eastern Region, a town without a functioning school, she faced an unexpected reality: there was no infrastructure, no support, and no path forward.

Yet, in this seemingly insurmountable challenge, Eunice saw a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “I wasn’t just given a posting; I was given a mission. Every child has the right to education, and I had to find a way to make that a reality,” she reflected
A Visionary’s Leadership
Eunice began with nothing but a community’s trust and a church’s empty halls. Her infectious enthusiasm drew the community to her side. Parents who once doubted the possibility of local schooling soon joined in, offering materials and support. Together, they built more than classrooms—they built hope. Today, the Noka M/A Basic School serves over 200 students, providing them with a safe, nurturing environment to learn and grow. But Eunice’s vision doesn’t stop there. She is determined to turn this modest school into a model institution, introducing innovative teaching techniques, holistic education programs, and building future partnerships to ensure sustainability.

Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges
Despite her immense achievements, Eunice remains humble. She recognizes the barriers women educators often face, especially in underdeveloped areas. “Being a woman in leadership, particularly in a rural community, comes with its challenges. Some people doubted my capability, but I didn’t let that stop me. My commitment to these children is stronger than any obstacle.”
Eunice has worked tirelessly to foster parental involvement, ensuring that every child has a support system both at school and at home. Under her leadership, parents are not only active participants in school activities but have become advocates for education in the wider community.

Eunice expressed gratitude for the community’s unwavering support. “The committee members, assemblyman, and pastors who offered their church buildings were instrumental in our success,” she acknowledged. Additionally, parents demonstrated their commitment to education by enthusiastically enrolling their children. Despite facing ridicule from former colleagues, Eunice remained steadfast. “Many advised me to request a reposting, but I refused to give up,” she recalled. Their criticism only strengthened her resolve.
Through her interactions with community members, Eunice gained a deeper understanding of the challenges they faced. Children were staying home due to a lack of access to education, and many risked life-threatening road accidents or exhaustion from lengthy commutes to school. These concerns made Eunice feel compelled to establish the school from scratch.

Collective Problem-Solving
Recognizing education as a fundamental right (SDG 4: Quality Education), Eunice resolved to take action. She leveraged local resources, fostering partnerships with churches to repurpose facilities for educational use. Reverend Ntiamoah’s generous offer of his church building provided a safe space for teaching and learning.
While maintaining separate classes for each group, Eunice would occasionally bring them together to teach comprehensive lessons about their country and community. This flexible approach allowed her to cater to diverse learning needs while fostering a sense of unity among the students. To ensure effective learning, Eunice implemented a buddy system. Children aged 3-6 sat with upper primary pupils, who assisted with monitoring while she taught. Following general lessons, she divided the students into their respective classes for level-specific instruction, assignments, and personalized attention.
Despite the challenges, Eunice’s adaptable approach kept students engaged. Parents, witnessing their children’s progress, remained enthusiastic and committed to education. Daily enrollments increased, and Eunice prioritized inclusive teaching and co-curricular activities, guaranteeing every student received attention and opportunities., To foster a love for learning, Eunice incorporated indoor games into the school’s routine. “I play with them, engage in activities together, and make every effort to keep them motivated,” she said. This hands-on approach helped build strong relationships and ensured students looked forward to each school day.

According to Eunice, the school’s rapid growth was largely driven by its convenient location, addressing a critical need in the community. Previously, students had to trek miles, risking life-threatening accidents. The school’s proximity alleviated these concerns, drawing in parents who had previously kept their children at home. Within six months, enrollment skyrocketed. Today, the school boasts over 200 pupils, marking a significant milestone in its first year. This remarkable growth has profoundly impacted the Noka community, transforming lives through accessible education.
The establishment of Noka M/A Basic School has been a game-changer for the community. Parents who previously left their children at home, worried about their safety, now have a reliable and accessible educational haven. The school has alleviated concerns about children being hit by vehicles, ensuring a secure learning environment.
This transformative impact is evident in the stories of students who were once confined to their homes due to safety fears but are now enthusiastic learners. The testimonials from parents and community members are numerous, underscoring the school’s profound influence:
– Children now have a safe space to learn and grow.
– Parents enjoy peace of mind, knowing their children are secure.
– The community has witnessed a significant increase in school enrollment.
The school’s presence has solved myriad problems, revitalizing hope and opportunities for Noka’s young minds.
A poignant testimony from a pupil resonated deeply with Eunice. The child shared a heartbreaking experience of losing a friend to a speeding vehicle while walking to school, which had left her traumatized and refusing to attend school out of fear. However, with the establishment of Noka M/A Basic School, this pupil’s life took a dramatic turn, and she now attends school happily, free from the dangers of distant commutes.
Parents’ anxieties have dissipated, replaced by relief and gratitude. No longer do they worry about their children’s safety; instead, they watch with pride as their wards thrive in a secure learning environment. Community members are ecstatic, celebrating the transformative impact of the school, which has brought reduced risk of accidents, increased access to education, and enhanced sense of community. Their excitement is palpable, and the school’s influence on Noka’s families and children is profound.

A Heart for Children
For Eunice, teaching isn’t just a job—it’s her life’s purpose. “I believe every child is a seed, and as teachers, we are the soil that nurtures them to grow into their full potential.” Her students adore her, not just because of her caring nature, but because she sees the potential in each of them. “She is more than a teacher to us,” said a student from the Upper Primary. “She is our guide, our protector, and our inspiration.”
From organizing co-curricular activities to providing life lessons, Eunice ensures that her pupils experience education beyond textbooks. Her hands-on approach includes engaging students in discussions about community issues, environmental sustainability, and personal growth. These lessons transcend the classroom and equip her students to become responsible citizens.
“Children, especially the younger ones, possess an endearing naivety,” she noted. “Their curiosity and innocence remind me of my own childhood, refreshing my outlook and keeping me youthful.” Eunice’s enthusiasm for teaching is fueled by the dynamic exchange of ideas and experiences with her students.
Eunice maintains a clear separation between her personal and professional life, ensuring that personal challenges don’t impact her teaching.
“I have personal struggles, but I don’t let them affect my work,” she said. “As a dedicated teacher, I prioritize my students’ education.” Commuting daily from Accra, Eunice pushes through fatigue to deliver engaging lessons. She saves her rest for after school, safeguarding her pupils’ learning experience.
“When faced with personal issues, I contain them, ensuring they don’t spill into the classroom,” Eunice emphasized. “My students deserve uninterrupted learning, and I’m committed to providing that.” Her professionalism and resilience inspire her students and colleagues alike.
A Global Impact
Eunice’s impact extends far beyond Noka. Her work resonates with the global commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. By providing accessible, equitable, and inclusive education, Eunice is contributing to a global movement that seeks to leave no child behind.
Her success has garnered national attention, including the Joy Impact Award, a testament to her relentless dedication. As Eunice stood on the podium to receive her award, she humbly reminded everyone, “This award isn’t just for me—it’s for the community of Noka and every teacher who dares to make a difference.

Eunice’s Advice to Aspiring Teachers
